RIGA - It was extremely important to For Latvia's Development (LA) party to show a respectable result in the European Parliament (EP) elections, Ivars Ijabs (LA), who has been repeatedly elected to the EP, told LETA.

The defeat in the 2022 Saeima elections, when the electoral list of LA/For was left 250 short of the necessary number of votes to win representation in the national parliament, was "quite traumatic" for the party, Ijabs admitted.

The MEP believes that his reelection is an appreciation of his work in the EP and also additional responsibility.

"The next EP will be a war and security parliament," said Ijabs who thinks he and his elected colleagues will be able to "work more closely together" to implement the ideas discussed in the election campaigns.

Ijab expressed concern about developments in Europe as a whole, as far-right and pro-Kremlin forces have gained influence in both France and Austria, which means that work in the EP could be "quite stressful", he said.

The big question is whether a pro-European majority will emerge to confirm the President of the European Commission, Ijabs said.

As reported, New Unity won the EP elections in Latvia, leaving the National Alliance in second place. New Unity and the National Alliance each won two mandates in the EP, while the United List, For Latvia's Development, Latvia First, Progressives and Harmony each won one mandate. Dombrovskis emerged as the candidate with higher voter support.
