RIGA - It is not enough to invest money in the education and Health care systems if they are not reformed, said Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins (New Unity) after a meeting with President Egils Levits today.

According to the prime minister, two things are needed to improve the health care and education system. Karins said that additional resources are needed, but it is also important to use them wisely. In his opinion, such a stage has been achieved that the country may not do it in the same way as earlier.

Karins underscored that more tax-payers' money has been invested in the system, hoping to achieve different results, but there had been no such results. He said that the education system in Latvia is not even - there are schools where pupils obtain good quality education, but there are also schools whose graduates have problems to enroll in universities or join the job market.

"More money will not solve the problems. We have to change the system. The same refers to health care system. Even  though more and more money is being invested in the system, there are still lines of patients, dissatisfaction. This shows that these are systemic challenges." said Karins.

Speaking about the 2023 budget, Karins said that Finance Minister Arvils Aseradens (New Unity) on Thursday will bring the budget to the parliament.

He said that there are three main priorities in the budget - defense, health care sector and education and science. Despite the additional funding granted in these sectors, broad reforms and improvements are needed both in education and health care sectors.
