RIGA - It is important to Latvia that there is a law-based world order, Saeima Vice Speaker Zanda Kalnina-Lukasevica (New Unity) said Friday while opening the conference "EU discussions 2025: Europe for the new era".
According to the lawmaker, the precondition for that is a just peace in Ukraine and holding Russia to account. "It is important to remember now that restoring the rule of law and justice is crucial for us, and we must continue to work tirelessly towards this end," the MP said.
Lukasevica-Kalnina believes that this is a time of opportunity for Europe under duress. In the historical context, the US has played a crucial role in shaping the modern international order, the politician noted, noting that the US contribution in the 20th century was the basis for the development of modern Western civilization.
The US was a major help, supporting European countries, giving them the impetus to develop, to cooperate and to resist the ghosts of the Soviet regime, Lukasevica-Kalnina said.
The politician believes that the idea of European defense, economic and energy independence is now self-evident. "Thanks to the new US administration's view of the international order, the European Union (EU) is being reborn," the MP said.
Lukasevica-Kalnina cited researchers and scholars' view that the EU is "to some extent" a product of US foreign policy. Europe has woken up, the lawmaker believes.
