Not all plumbing problems need immediate attention. A loose fixture that keeps dripping can wait. But it’s different if a plumbing issue poses a safety risk.
In the following situations, a delay in repairs can be much more than an inconvenience.
Water is flowing at a rate faster than you can contain it
A small drip is one thing. It is a different story when the pipe suddenly bursts open or cracks and begins to release a significant amount of water. Water can quickly infiltrate the:
- Floor
- Walls
- Ceiling
- Other surfaces.
This means more damage.
First, closing the water can help to reduce the immediate damage. But only if it is safe to reach the main water valve. While at it, request emergency plumbing repairs immediately.
Wastewater is coming back through your fixtures
Water can back up through a:
- Toilet
- Shower drain
- Sink.
This is a big emergency. It may indicate a clog in the drainage line.
Please do not continue to use or flush items through the affected fixture. Sending more water into the system will aggravate backup and spread contaminated water throughout the house.
You cannot find a way to stop the water
Sometimes, the source of the leak is visible. But turning off the fixture doesn’t stop it. This happens if:
- The valve fails
- The supply line is damaged
- A fixture breaks.
As a result, water can keep leaking out.
If the source cannot be controlled and water continues to flow, it requires immediate attention. If feasible, turn off the main water valve to the house and avoid unsafe areas.
Water has entered an electrical zone
Water and electricity can be very dangerous together. Never enter an area to investigate a leak if water has leaked onto:
- Wiring
- Electrical panels
- Appliances.
If there is an immediate electrical hazard, contact the appropriate emergency service.
You notice gas around a water heater
If a gas-powered water heater emits a gas odor, it is an emergency. It could indicate:
- A gas leak
- A problem with the appliance.
If you smell gas, avoid:
- Flames
- Switches
- Other possible ignition sources.
Evacuate and notify the proper gas or emergency service from a safe place.
Delaying repairs could put your home at risk
The urgency of a plumbing problem isn't limited to how inconvenient it is. Consider the consequences of this situation persisting for several hours.
Water that infiltrates walls or floors can cause severe damage. A sewage backup can contaminate living areas. A leak may ruin furniture and other valuables.
It is an emergency if it could cause more damage within a short time.
The last words
In these cases, waiting for regular service hours may not be practical. Prompt action may help limit the damage and the scope of the problem.
