RIGA - The green course is the necessity for Europe's energy independence, Latvian Environment Protection and Regional Development Minister Arturs Toms Pless (For Development) said at the EU environment ministers' council.

The EU ministers today met to discuss priorities in the environment sector - climate neutral economy, use of sustainable resources, transition to circular economy and other issues.

"In cooperation with EU partners, more ambitious steps should be made in order to increase renewable energy capacities, increase energy efficiency in all national economic sectors, reduce use of fossil fuels in households and business sectors. I have already said earlier that the green course is a vital necessity, especially now when Latvia and the whole Europe tries to increase energy independence from the third countries in response to Russia's war in Ukraine," said Pless.
