RIGA - The main generator and non-ferrous metal have been stolen from a wind turbine that has collapsed in Bunka municipality in Dienvidkurzeme municipality, Janis Meisters, owner of the wind park management company Jaunmiki, told LETA.

He said that the last visit to the wind park was on Monday, April 27, at 21.00, while on Tuesday around 11.00 theft was detected. Meisters mentioned that the theft most likely occurred at night.

Meisters noted that the main generator weighing less than two tons was stolen from the fallen wind turbine, indicating that heavy machinery was used in the theft. Electrical wires and non-ferrous metal from the bottom to the top of the wind turbine were also stolen, as well as smaller parts that had been bolted down.

The damage caused by the theft could amount to around EUR 3,000, Meisters estimated.

He added that the State Police had been informed and had already inspected the scene and asked for further information.

Commenting on the possible persons involved in the theft, Meisters admitted that there is no concrete information at the moment, but that, given the use of heavy machinery, it is likely that the persons involved are from the surrounding area.

The dismantling of the downed wind turbine is planned to take place in the next few days.

As reported, a wind turbine collapsed on Sunday in the Bunka parish in Dienvidkurzeme municipality.

At around 8 a.m., information was received from Sadales Tikls power transmission operator about a power outage, but at noon the wind farm manager reported that one of the turbines had fallen down. The power supply was immediately cut off at the scene.

The wind park has five small turbines, each with a capacity of 200 kilowatts, and a total capacity of one megawatt. The turbines are not new - they were installed about 15 years ago, but the current owner bought them five to six years ago.

The turbines have had technical problems in the past and have not been in working order. Restoring them would require a significant investment, which is why it was decided to sell the wind farm, said Meisters. According to a representative of the company involved in the wind farm, an agreement with a potential buyer was already planned for May this year.

According to Firmas.lv, Jaunmiki is wholly owned by Meisters. The company was registered in 2012. In 2024, it had a turnover of EUR 14,357 and a loss of EUR 19,018. The company's financial data for 2025 are not available.
