TALLINN - Estonian President Alar Karis met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in Seville on the sidelines of the UN International Conference on Financing for Development, where they discussed UN reform, the Middle East conflict, and support for Ukraine.

Karis stressed that Ukraine must remain at the center of the UN agenda until Russia's aggression ends and peace is achieved.

"Estonia supports all international efforts that contribute to a just peace," the president said, adding that it is essential to continue defending the principles of the UN Charter and Ukraine's territorial integrity.

Addressing the Gaza conflict and the broader Middle East crisis, the president emphasized that achieving a ceasefire would create an opportunity to reduce violence and allow room for diplomatic solutions.

"A two-state solution is possible if terrorist hostilities and military attacks against civilians come to an end," the president stated, expressing hope that diplomacy will continue and lead to an end to the war in Gaza.

Karis also underscored the need for UN reform and expressed support for the secretary-general's UN80 initiative, aimed at making the organization's work more efficient and better suited to modern needs.

"It is also essential to continue Security Council reform and prevent the misuse of veto power," the Estonian president said.

Karis also spoke about Estonia's candidacy for membership in the UN Human Rights Council for the term 2026-2028.
