TALLINN – Estonian MEP Riho Terras noted against the background of tensions arising around China and Taiwan that Estonia should give up the 16+1 cooperation format and communicate with China at the level of the European Union, the daily Postimees writes.

"China's power moves against Taiwan are another example of why Estonia should abandon the 16+1 format and communicate with China uniformly at the level of the European Union," Terras said, adding that it is clear that the main purpose of the format in question is to break European unity.

"In tense situations, it is important that European countries maintain a uniform approach. We can also see this in Russia's war against Ukraine," the MEP said.

According to Terras, from Estonia's point of view, it is undoubtedly important that tensions do not increase in Asia.

"If a military conflict breaks out in Asia or there is an escalation between China and Taiwan, it will inevitably mean that the focus of the United States will shift from Europe, which in turn will give Russia more freedom of action. We cannot allow this to happen," the MEP said.
