TALLINN - This week, the Estonian Foreign Ministry’s Secretary General Jonatan Vseviov visited New York, where he held meetings with UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Peacebuilding Rosemary DiCarlo and UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix.

Discussions focused on Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, the continued need to support Ukraine, and the importance of upholding the principles of the UN Charter. Vseviov emphasized that achieving a lasting and just peace in Ukraine is critical. He stressed that to raise the cost of Russia’s war, it is essential to continue isolating Russia and condemning its actions in international organizations, Foreign Ministry spokespeople said.

The meetings also covered the UN reform process and how its aim should be to restore the credibility, effectiveness, and impact of the UN and enhance its ability to respond to conflicts. Additionally, discussions highlighted the need to ensure the UN’s readiness to fulfill its leadership role in advancing a multilateral, rules-based international order in accordance with the UN Charter.

During his visit, Vseviov met with approximately 30 UN ambassadors, including representatives from Ukraine, India, China, France, Saudi Arabia, the head of the EU delegation, and the US chargé d’affaires. Bilateral meetings also focused on raising the cost of Russia’s aggression, while discussions explored the role of the UN in maintaining a rules-based international order, particularly in light of its upcoming 80th anniversary, and Estonia’s candidacy for the UN Human Rights Council for the years 2026-2028.
