TALLINN – Martin Roger, the deputy secretary general for political affairs at the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, participated in the European Union and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) ministerial meeting in Kuwait on Oct. 5-6, which focused on regional security and strengthening cooperation.
"The EU and GCC are working on free trade and strategic partnership agreements to create a framework that supports digital trade, innovation, investments, education, security, and cultural exchange," Roger said.
According to him, Estonia and the EU are committed to upholding the UN Charter, supporting Ukraine, and de-escalating tensions in the Middle East, focusing on alleviating the humanitarian situation, releasing hostages, and ending hostilities.
"The key to lasting peace is a two-state solution that guarantees the security of both the Israeli and Palestinian people," he added.
The topic of Russia's shadow fleet was also discussed at the meeting. Roger noted that the shadow fleet is a tool for circumventing sanctions and poses a significant threat to the environment and critical infrastructure in both Europe and the Persian Gulf region.
During the visit, several bilateral meetings took place. Roger discussed promoting interregional trade and business ties with GCC Secretary-General Jasem Albudaiwi, regional security and the Gaza peace plan with Kuwait's Deputy Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, and deepening bilateral relations with UAE Minister of State Khalifa Shaheen Al Marar.
An agreement was reached to hold political consultations, and upcoming events and visits were discussed. A recurring theme in every meeting was Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine and the need to continue international pressure to ensure accountability for the aggression and to establish justice.
Additionally, Roger visited the NATO regional center and met with its team.
