Estonia plans civilian service for young people unfit for conscription

Young people not fit for military conscript service due to their health will soon have to complete civilian conscript service lasting from 12-14 months if a plan that has been in the making at the Estonian Interior Ministry for two years is carried out, Postimees newspaper said. The system, similar to the one currently used in Switzerland, Norway and Israel, is aimed at enabling Estonia to have a sufficient reserve of specialists in other fields aside from the defense forces in the event of a crisis.
