TALLINN - Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur and Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov signed a defense procurement memorandum on the fringes of a meeting of the Nordic-Baltic Cooperation (NB8) format and the Nordic Group in Copenhagen on Wednesday.
The signed memorandum creates a basis for the organization of tenders for the armed forces of Ukraine from the Estonian defense industry in accordance with Ukraine's military needs, ministry spokespeople said.
Topics discussed at the meeting of the Nordic Group and the NB8 format focused on the security of the Baltic Sea region and helping Ukraine and Moldova.
"At the meeting of the Nordic Group, my colleagues and I discussed the continuation of military aid to Ukraine more decisively than before. We call on the allies to allocate 0.25 percent of GDP for this purpose. Estonia's strategy is to allocate support in this amount in the years 2024-27, and this year we have achieved this goal from our GDP. In the following years, we will focus on providing military aid to Ukraine through the production of the Estonian defense industry," Pevkur said.
The participants also discussed the security situation in the Baltic Sea region and the underwater cables that were broken in the Baltic Sea this week. The defense ministers of the Nordic and Baltic countries also discussed issues related to defense assistance to Moldova.
"Estonia's support to Moldova in the field of defense entails primarily the implementation of European Peace Facility funds through procurement organization, with the aim of strengthening Moldova's armed forces," Pevkur said.
The Nordic Group consists of the defense ministers of the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Scandinavia and the Baltic states. The Nordic-Baltic format brings together the Nordic and Baltic countries.
