RIGA - In response to Russia's allegations against Latvia as well as Estonia and Lithuania, the European Parliament's (EP) Conference of Presidents has rejected claims that Baltic airspace has been used to attack Russia.

The EP Conference of Presidents says in a statement that it strongly rejects the recent unfounded and dangerous allegations made by the Russian Federation against Latvia as well as Estonia and Lithuania, including claims that the Baltic states are preparing hostile actions against Russia or allowing their territory, airspace or military facilities to be used for attacks against Russia.

These accusations form part of a broader pattern of intimidation, disinformation and provocation directed against EU member states and are particularly serious in light of repeated incursions of unidentified drones into the airspace and territory of the Baltic states.

Such actions are unacceptable and contribute to heightened tensions and instability in the region, the EP Conference of Presidents says.

The Conference of Presidents expresses its full solidarity with Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. No EU member state can be threatened, intimidated or subjected to coercive pressure by Russia. The security of the Baltic states is the security of the European Union as a whole.

"We call on the Commission, the High Representative and the Council to continue supporting Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, in close coordination with NATO, in strengthening airspace surveillance, counter-drone capabilities and situational awareness, and in reinforcing their capacity to prevent and respond to further incursions," the statement reads.

It also calls on the European Commission (EC), High Representative Kaja Kallas and the Council to continue countering disinformation with stronger strategic communication, mobilize EU resources to protect the bloc's Eastern flank and reject fake news that threaten European democracy and security.

The European Union must remain united, vigilant and resolute in the face of Russian attempts to destabilize its neighborhood, undermine European security and divide member states, the EP Conference of Presidents stresses.

As reported, EC President Ursula von der Leyen said that Russia's threats to the Baltic states were unacceptable and Europe would respond to them with unity and strength.

EP President Roberta Metsola also expressed her solidarity with the Baltic states.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, for his part, described as ridiculous the claim by the Russian foreign intelligence service that Ukraine was preparing strikes against Russia from Baltic territory and that Ukrainian soldiers had arrived in Latvia.

"This Russian claim is absolutely ridiculous and Russia knows it," Rutte told reporters in Brussels.

It has also been reported that several foreign drones have flown into Baltic airspace in recent months. In most cases, these have been Ukrainian drones that had originally been directed at targets in Russia but were diverted by Russian forces toward the Baltics.

The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) this week spread false allegations that Ukraine was preparing strikes against Russian targets from the territory of the Baltic states and that Ukrainian soldiers had already been sent to Latvia.
