The Savisaar Saga

The removal of Tallinn Mayor Edgar Savisaar, who is also chairman of the Center Party. from power has provoked staunch protest from his supporters.
Savisaar, the longserving mayor in the Estonian capital, is facing corruption charges.
The Tallinn Circuit Court last Friday upheld the ruling of a first tier court to exclude Savisaar from office in connection with his being a suspect in a corruption investigation.

But the Tallinn city council, a bedrock of Savisaar supporters, on Thursday decided to turn to the Supreme Court to find out whether the ruling is consistent with the spirit of constitution.
And large scale petitions have been sent around Estonia and signed in a bid to keep the Center Party leader in office.
Adding to Savisaar’s woes, he is even being challenged for his role as leader of the party by Kadri Simson, who says she is doing it to share the burden with Savisaar. The mayor is still recovering from a life threatening infection that left him comatose at the start of the year.
