RIGA - The European Commission's Executive Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis will be able to continue in his current job until the end of his office term even though he is running in this year's European Parliament elections as the lead candidate on New Unity's electoral list, his adviser Maija Celmina told LETA.

She indicated that the European Commission's political guidelines do not require a commissioner to renounce the mandate because of participation in a European Parliament elections, provided that the commissioner carries on with their office duties and the election campaign is separated from work on the Commission.

Dombrovskis is the European Commission's Executive Vice President and Commissioner for Trade.

As reported, Dombrovskis will top New Unity's electoral list in the upcoming European Parliament elections, the party's council chairman and current Finance Minister Arvils Aseradens said last week.

Dombrovskis will be followed on the electoral list by current Foreign Minister Krisjanis Karins and European Parliament Member Sandra Kalniete. Also on the party's list are current European Parliament Members Inese Vaidere and Dace Melbarde, as several MPs like Andrejs Judrins, Janis Reirs, Zanda Kalnina-Lukasevica, Irma Kalnina, Anna Rancane and Martins Dagis, as well as other politicians, historians and cultural heritage keepers.

In Latvia, the EP elections are scheduled for early June.
