I’m beginning to wonder whether this whole DIASPORA labelling of my compatriots abroad is not just some clever make-work marketing shtik at the expense of a whole category of Latvians who were displaced as refugees after the end of the Second World War. That war ended for my father when he shuffled off his mortal coil in the early hours of Sept. 21, 2015. Technically, it had commenced for him soon after June 17, 1940 when, as a member of Balvi City Band, he had to play the “Internationale” on his flugel horn for the raising of the Red flag in the town square.
