RIGA - The traditional costume parade organized annually in Riga to mark the birthday of Sherlock Holmes, a fictional 19th-century detective created by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, drew a crowd of some 200 people on Sunday.
About 20 of the most ardent fans of the stories about Sherlock Holmes, dressed up as different characters or simply Londoners of the Victorian era, participated in the costume parade. One of the Holmes' doubles drove a vintage car to the event. Later prizes will be awarded to the winners in several categories, including The Best Holmes' Lookalike, The Most Elegant Gentleman, The Best Four-legged Pal, The Best Beard and Moustache, etc.
Although few in number, the costumed participants basked in the attention of a couple of hundreds of Rigans and tourists who were snapping pictures of the ladies and gentlemen in old-fashioned attires.
Those, who had not made own costumes, still had an opportunity to try on the 19th-century clothes and pose for a photographer in Cafe Film Noir in the nearby movie house Splendid Palace. At 6 p.m. the movie house will screen Sherlock Holmes silent movie made in 1916, one of the first films ever made about the famous detective and considered lost for many years. It will be the first time when this film will be shown in Latvia. The accompaniment will be provided by a duo of contemporary jazzmen - Latvian saxophone player Deniss Paskevics and Lithuanian percussionist Arkady Gotesman.
It is the sixth time when Sherlock Holmes' unofficial birthday is celebrated in Riga in early January. Many of the scenes from the popular Soviet TV series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson were filmed in the narrow cobbled streets of Riga’s Old Town.
