3 universities establish scholarship for students studying languages of all Baltic nations

RIGA - The rectors of the University of Latvia, the University of Tartu and Vilnius University have signed an agreement on the establishment of a new scholarship to support students who study the languages of all the three Baltic countries.

The purpose of the 2,000-euro scholarship is to foster cross-border cooperation among the Baltic countries and academic cooperation among the leading Baltic universities, spokespeople for the University of Latvia told BNS.

Students who know at least one of the three official languages at the C1 proficiency level and the other two at the A2 level or better may apply for the scholarship.

There are not too many such students, but that is the main goal of the scholarship -- to encourage students to improve their command of all three languages, University of Latvia Rector Indrikis Muiznieks told BNS.

Students will be able to use the scholarship to study at other universities or to attain other study-related objectives. The rectors of the three universities wish that recipients of the scholarship pursue academic careers.

The scholarship will be awarded annually. The first scholarship will be awarded by the University of Tartu later this year, the University of Latvia will present the scholarship in 2018 and Vilnius University in 2019. The University of Tartu will begin accepting students' applications at the end of November.
