RIGA - 106 people have registered to change their sex in Latvia since 1999, the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP) told LETA.

People under the age of 15 have not changed their gender. Two people in the 15-17 age group have changed their gender, and 104 people in the 18 and over age group.

This information is collected for all persons included in the Register of Natural Persons, regardless of their nationality - citizen, non-citizen, foreigner.

If a person's birth is registered in Latvia, he or she must first apply for his or her sex change at a registry office, which will make the change in the person's birth register. The next step is to have new identity documents issued by the PMLP.

It has already been reported that the Saeima last week rejected a proposal by the opposition party Latvia First to introduce prison sentences for changing the sex of a minor.
