RIGA - Work is under way to organize transportation of personal protective equipment from China to Latvia, several institutions' representatives told Saeima's Defense, Internal Affairs and Corruption Prevention Committee today.
According to the Health Ministry's representatives, an agreement has been reached on sending a plane to China to transport personal protective equipment to Latvia. If this shipment is received, Latvia will have enough personal protective equipment, she said.
Furthermore, new personal protective equipment from local manufacturers is expected to land on shelves in pharmacies today, said the Health Ministry's representative.
On March 15, Latvian Nurses' Association said that nurses and other healthcare personnel were short of personal protective equipment. Yesterday, the Economics Ministry announced that it was talking with several existing and potential Latvian manufacturers in order to expand production of disinfectants and facial masks in Latvia to meet the needs of Latvian residents and businesses, as well as healthcare facilities.
Active negotiations are under way with several companies, including Latvijas Balzams, Spodriba, Rigas Farmaceitiska Rupnica and others. Riga Technical University is also involved in the negotiations.
Similarly, on Thursday the government backed a proposal by the Interior Ministry that alcohol seized by the police be used for disinfection by the authorities.
