For more than two decades, Allium UPI has played a defining role in shaping the Baltic medical supply and consumer health landscape, evolving from a single-market distributor into a regional powerhouse. Reflecting on the company’s journey, Kristina Grazuliene, CEO of Allium UPI (Lithuania), Marit Sonajalg, CEO of Allium UPI OU (Estonia), Ilgvars Uzuls, CEO of Allium UPI SIA (Latvia) highlight the core philosophy behind its success for The Baltic Times Magazine: “Our strength lies in long-term partnerships, disciplined execution, and a deep understanding of the Baltic healthcare ecosystem.”
Allium UPI has operated in the Baltic medical supply market for over two decades. Please talk about the milestones.
Over the past twenty years, the company has grown from a single-country operation into a fully integrated Baltic distribution platform covering medical devices, medical supplies, surgical equipment, food supplements, consumer health and pharmacy cosmetics. Allium UPI was established in 2000 by its sole shareholder Magnum AS, one of the strongest and most reputable healthcare groups in Northern Europe.
Key milestones include expanding operations into all three Baltic states, building unified commercial and logistics structures, and forming long-term exclusive partnerships with global manufacturers, local pharma wholesalers and retailers, as well as strengthening consumer satisfaction and best-practice pathways from problem identification to consideration and product trial. These partnerships have enabled Allium UPI to secure leading positions in pharmacy retail, hospitals and the outpatient care sector across Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
Today, Allium UPI is recognized as one of the most reliable partners in the Baltic pharma retail ecosystem, with a proven track record of sustainable business, brand building, strong reputation, consistent category growth and excellent service for both suppliers and customers.
The healthcare and pharmaceutical distribution sector is becoming more competitive and tech driven. What innovations or technologies is Allium UPI investing in to maintain its market edge?
Allium UPI continues to invest in advanced forecasting systems, digital analytics and modern product lifecycle management solutions supporting medical devices, food supplements and consumer health categories. We utilise automated marketing platforms, regulatory digital tools, real-time traceability systems and CRM solutions for both pharmaceutical and medical device field teams.
Despite the fact that the pharma sector is very conservative and strictly regulated by law, Allium UPI actively integrates technologies that improve efficiency without compromising compliance or patient safety.
We implement solutions that ensure quicker and more efficient access to products for both end users and healthcare professionals, including improved digital ordering tools, optimised e-commerce pathways and faster information flow between manufacturers, pharmacies and medical institutions.
These innovations strengthen our ability to provide efficient, compliant and scalable distribution across all three Baltic states, ensuring our partners achieve faster, more predictable and sustainable growth.
What is characteristic to the Baltic medical supply market? How are the markets in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia different?
The Baltic region is compact yet highly dynamic, with a strong pharmacy culture, high trust in regulated medical products and rapidly growing consumer awareness. Working across all three countries allows us to build unified regional strategies while adapting to local specifics, which is essential for international partners entering the Baltics.
Estonia is a forward-thinking and ambitious nation with a rich heritage that combines western influences with an eastern drive for success. The country is highly pro-business with one of the most liberal trade and investment environments in Europe. Estonia was the first European country to introduce a flat tax, a reform that supported long-term economic growth and stability. It’s the most digitalized market with fast adoption of new technologies and healthcare providers that focus heavily on efficiency.
Latvia is a natural crossroads between east and west, shaped by Hanseatic and European traditions. This has created a cosmopolitan, western-oriented and multilingual society with a well-educated and ambitious workforce. Logistically and culturally, Latvia is well positioned as a business hub in Northern Europe and a strong base for east–west trade.
Lithuania is one of the fastest-growing economies in the European Union. Lithuania has the largest population and shows strong demand in consumer health, diabetes care, medical supplies and pharmacy cosmetics. It offers highly developed business infrastructure and one of the most educated and multilingual workforces in the region. The country’s strategic location in the centre of the EU provides excellent access to both western and northern markets and benefits from well-established cultural and commercial ties across Europe.
How do you see the company’s role evolving over the next five years, particularly with increasing digitalization in healthcare?
We expect Allium UPI to strengthen its role as a regional expert that connects international manufacturers with Baltic healthcare providers and pharmacies through digital tools, education platforms, real-time analytics and patient-centered marketing. Digitalization will increase demand for precise forecasting, personalized communication and omnichannel category management. Our goal is to support partners with intelligent market insights and ensure their brands are visible, trusted and growing across all touchpoints in the Baltic region.
Over the next five years, we will further integrate data-driven decision making into every part of our commercial model. This includes advanced demand planning, automated marketing pathways, AI-supported consumer and patient insights and digital training tools for pharmacy professionals and HCPs. We also expect the role of connected medical devices, personalized nutrition and digital therapeutics to expand significantly, which creates new opportunities for international suppliers entering the Baltics.
Allium UPI will continue evolving from a traditional distributor into a strategic growth partner that provides access to real-time market intelligence, digitally supported field teams and a fast, compliant route to market for medical devices, food supplements, medical supplies and pharmacy cosmetics. This transformation will enable our partners to accelerate market access, reduce complexity and achieve sustainable long-term growth in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
As an exclusive distributor for several international brands, how does Allium UPI select its partners and what do you look for in long-term supplier relationships?
We choose partners with strong commitment to quality, ethical business practices, regulatory compliance and long-term market vision. Success in the Baltic region requires patience, investment and trust; therefore, we work only with manufacturers that value sustainable growth rather than short-term gains. In return, we offer full dedication to brand development, deep market expertise, local regulatory support and high engagement levels across our commercial, marketing and medical teams.
What is the company’s goal in sustainability?
Our sustainability goals focus on responsible supply chain management, reduction of waste, compliance with packaging requirements, efficient logistics and continuous training of our teams and pharmacy partners. We support brands that prioritise safety, sustainability and traceability. Operating within the pharma sector obliges us to follow the highest cultural, ethical and environmental standards, and this is fully integrated into daily operations.
The healthcare industry relies heavily on skilled professionals. How do you attract and retain top talent in such a specialized and regulated field?
We invest in employee development, professional training, certification and opportunities to work with internationally recognized brands. Our culture is built on accountability, transparency and strong team engagement. People choose to stay because they can grow, contribute and see the impact of their work on the overall success of the company. High employee engagement levels are one of our strongest competitive advantages. Allium UPI has an excellent reputation in all three Baltic countries, which means we do not face talent shortages and we consistently attract highly motivated professionals without hiring difficulties.
Despite market challenges, your company maintained strong profitability in recent years. What were the key drivers behind that success?
The main drivers were disciplined cost management, strong category strategies, long-term supplier relationships and fast adaptation to changing market needs across different clients. Our diversified portfolio across medical supplies, consumer health, dermo cosmetics and food supplements provided stability during fluctuations in individual categories. The company also benefited from high operational efficiency and strong organisational culture that ensured continuity and resilience.
Do you plan to expand in 2026 or in the future? What do you expect from the coming years? What trends should be watched?
We see significant potential in further expanding our presence in consumer health, medical supplies, pharmacy cosmetics and modern medical technologies. The Baltics remain an attractive region for international manufacturers due to stable demand, growing health awareness, strong public healthcare systems and rising purchasing power. Key trends to watch include digital patient tools, personalized nutrition, advanced wound care and the evolving needs of an aging population. These trends will shape the future of healthcare and create strong opportunities for international brands that aim to enter the Baltic region with a reliable partner. Allium UPI will continue to strengthen its position as the leading partner for international brands seeking sustainable and long-term growth in the Baltics.
