VILNIUS - When Lithuania celebrated 25 years since declaring independence from the Soviet Union earlier this year, anyone crossing the Green Bridge in Central Vilnius could have gazed up at the four bronze statues towering over them — icons of Soviet realism, monuments of a bygone past. Not anymore. The newly elected mayor of Vilnius, Remigius Simasius, announced a few weeks ago that Vilnius Municipality would be removing these statues from the bridge.
