RIGA - Latvia will always be grateful to the brave members of the Supreme Council who voted for the declaration on the restoration of Latvia's independence on May 4, 1990, Saeima Speaker Inara Murniece (National Alliance) said today at the opening of a special exhibition by the Freedom Monument in honor of the 30th anniversary of the declaration.
"We will always be grateful to those who voted for our independence on May 4, for your courage, daring, and clear awareness that the country's independence must be restored, regardless of any circumstances," Murniece emphasized.
The speaker of the Saeima expressed that the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the May 4 Declaration is the most important event in Latvia this year. Murniece pointed out that at that time there was a huge popular support for the adoption of the declaration. The politician also drew attention to the August 21, 1991 vote on the adoption of the constitutional law on the state status of Latvia.
Murniece also pointed out that ''we are currently looking at protests in Belarus, where we see people who want to live with dignity and want to have the opportunity to hold transparent and fair elections,'' she said, reminding that this week the Latvian Parliament adopted statements of support for the people of Belarus.
