We ourselves are responsible for our nation - Vejonis

RIGA - The Convocation of the Constitutional Assembly on 1 May 1920 proclaimed the victory of the Latvian people in the War of Independence symbolically, Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis said in a statement.

''The fight for independent Latvia in the Latvian War of Independence required the heroism and courage of the entire people. The historical events confirm that the courage to stand up for one’s country is necessary for both big and minor deeds every day so that independent Latvia would exist and prosper forever. Everyone must defend democratic Latvia, to take care of the common good, and to be a responsible member of civic society,'' the president said.

''I am sure that May 1 will always remind us of the responsible decisions that we have been able to make and implement, and encourage us for the necessary decisions that will have to be taken in the future of Latvia,'' Vejonis emphasized.

''The state will never be finished. Everyone often sees new opportunities for the development and growth of Latvia. Only we are responsible for our Latvia, and Latvia will be the way we will shape it with our own decisions and deeds,'' the president went on to say.
