RIGA - Latvian highly appreciates the close and friendly relations between Latvia and Ireland and the great cooperation on diaspora issues, said Saeima speaker Edvards Smiltens (United List) during his meeting with Irish Ambassador to Latvia Eimear Friel.
Latvia and Ireland this year celebrate the centenary of the parliament and the Constitution, LETA learned from the parliament press service. The parties underscored that this is an important moment to evaluate the significance of independence and democracy.
The main issue on the agenda is security, said Smiltens, discussing with the ambassador the consequences of Russia's war in Ukraine. The parties agreed that the countries together should continue providing all possible support to Ukraine.
Smiltens noted the successful economic cooperation between both countries. The parties agreed that the most important challenge in the economy is energy resources. Smiltens and Friel also discussed further cooperation opportunities, including in the digital sector.
