RIGA - The priorities of new Transport Minister Janis Vitenbergs (National Alliance) will be development of railway, public transport and road infrastructure, LETA learned from the Transport Ministry's representatives.

Vitenbergs plans to work on measures that will develop safe, convenient and environmentally-friendly transport infrastructure that will ensure people's mobility needs and change their everyday habits in a long term,

"The sector's biggest challenge is to make transportation greener, considering that transport vehicles are among the largest source of air pollution. Thus, like in other European countries, also in Latvia we will continue to strengthen railway as the transport backbone, investing government budget and EU funds in it," said Vitenbergs.

He said that work on Rail Baltica project will be continued.

Also, regional public transport plays a significant role in ensuring people's mobility in the whole territory of the country.

"In order to promote safer and more convenient transportation of cyclists and pedestrians, development of micromobility infrastructure will be continued," the minister said.
