Vilnius Municipality is setting up a special commission to address social issues related to the Vilnius-based Roma community. The commission will also undertake the issue of Roma integration.

Vice-Mayor Gintautas Paluckas told the BNS news service on July 23, the commission would be set up next week.

Its first meeting will discuss a five-step program on Roma education, accommodation, employment and fighting drug trade.

The court have ordered the Vilnius authorities to demolish nine Roma buildings, which had been built illegally. However, Paluckas said it would be "inhumane" to do so without addressing the issue of their accommodation.

Figures from the 2011 census show that around 2,100 Roma people live in Lithuania.
