VILNIUS - Vilnius Airport has launched automated border control gates to facilitate the flow of passengers through the airport, Lietuvos Oro Uostai (Lithuanian Airports) said on Friday.
No other airport in the Baltic countries and Poland currently has such a system, the airport's operator said.
"In addition to the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) counters, we now offer passengers the possibility of self-service border checks," Vilnius Airport CEO Dainius Ciuplys said in a press release.
"We have installed six smart gates in the arrival hall and four in the departure hall. The automated border control system will enable travelers to save time," he added.
The gates are still being tested. Passengers are asked to scan their IDs and if the documents meet the requirements, they can go through biometric verification. VSAT officers may additionally check travelers at the testing stage.
Currently, the new smart gates can be used by EU, EEA and Swiss citizens who have IDs with a digital chip.
Non-EU citizens will continue to use counters manned by travelers to use counters manned by VSAT officers.
