UN General Assembly president to arrive on visit to Latvia today

RIGA - From today until July 23, the president of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, Abdulla Shahid, will be on a visit to Latvia, LETA was informed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MA).

Shahid will visit Latvia to discuss current UN and regional issues - the global security situation, the international impact of Russia's war in Ukraine, sustainable development and climate issues, as well as bilateral relations between Latvia and the Maldives.

This will be the first visit of the President of the UN General Assembly to Latvia, which gives it special importance.

The visit includes meetings with the highest officials of Latvia, the Riga mayor, as well as a visit to the Ukrainian refugee center and Riga Technical University. Shahid will take part in a round table discussion on achieving sustainable development goals in times of global geopolitical challenges, jointly organized by the Institute of International Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Library of Latvia.

All 193 UN member states are represented in the General Assembly as the main decision-making body of the UN.
