Tsahkna discusses Russian accountability with Latvian, Lithuanian counterparts

TALLINN – Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna met with Latvian Minister of Justice Edvards Smiltēns and Lithuanian Minister of Justice Rita Tamašunienė in Tallinn on Monday. The meeting focused on holding Russia accountable for its aggression against Ukraine and for international crimes.

Issues related to migration and projects connecting the region, including Rail Baltica, were also discussed.

"Today, on Ukraine's Independence Day, our message is clear: Ukrainians have the right to their freedom and future. Russia's aggression and international crimes must have consequences. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania will continue to jointly support Ukraine and stand for Russia to be held accountable for its actions," said Foreign Minister Tsahkna.

The ministers also discussed Belarus's instrumentalization of migration and the resulting pressure on the region. According to Tsahkna, using migration as a tool of pressure is unacceptable, and Estonia will continue to cooperate closely with Latvia and Lithuania on this issue.

Regarding Rail Baltica, the importance of close cooperation between Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania was emphasized. The joint action of the three countries is crucial both for advancing the project and for defending their interests in the European Union.
