RIGA - In a study called Donald Trump: America First, Martins Hirss, a researcher at the Center for Security and Strategic Research at the Latvian National Defense Academy, points out that it is in Latvia's interests for the United States to actively support its allies, however, it is doubtful whether the foreign policy of U.S. President Donald Trump will be aimed at solving international challenges.

According to the export, the main beliefs by Trump, which are not favorable in countries located on NATO's eastern flank, is sympathies towards autocratic leaders, including Russia, as well as a critical attitude towards U.S. allies and free trade. At the same time, he emphasizes that Trump's personality and foreign policy offer is in stark contrast with what the United States' closest allies expect.

Trump's quick change of opinions, lies and various comments on international political matters has lessened U.S. soft-power around the world, and this is certainly not beneficial for Latvia, Hirss said.

''A strong and dominant, as well as stable and predictable United States is in Latvia's interests. Trump's the United States is none of these,'' the expert believes.

''It is hard to predict President Trump's foreign policy, however, NATO's eastern members have a reason to be concerned about a possible change in relations with Russia. Forgetting Russia's aggression in Ukraine and Syria and ''restarting'' relations with Russia could set a dangerous precedent,'' Hirss said.
