Transatlantic unity in sustaining diplomatic and economic pressure on Russia is important - Rinkevics

RIGA - On January 18, Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics (New Unity) met with the United States Senator, Steve Daines, for a discussion on bilateral cooperation on security and energy, as well as current international developments, LETA learned from the Foreign Ministry.

The Foreign Minister expressed his appreciation for the close relations between Latvia and the United States in the security and defense sector, and he thanked the United States for its substantial contribution to the strengthening of the security of the Baltic States, Latvia in particular.

It is vital to continue supporting Ukraine, Rinkevics underlined in an exchange of views on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He noted that the transatlantic unity in sustaining diplomatic and economic pressure on Russia was of equal importance.

The officials also discussed energy policy issues. The Foreign Minister and the U.S. Senator were in agreement that it was essential to make further efforts towards the strengthening of energy security, transition to renewable energy and clean technologies, and promotion of energy efficiency.
