RIGA - The traffic safety situation in Latvia is currently satisfactory, although 44 people have lost their already lives this year on Latvia's roads, Civil Police Chief Normunds Krapsis told members of the press today.
Compared to the same period last year, the number of deaths this year has remained almost identical. Police data also show that the number fines issued have not lessened.
Krapsis drew attention to the fact that the State Police and society as a whole are not satisfied with the above mentioned.
The State Police today launched a new road safety campaign called Aggressive Driving Leaves Scars. During the campaign, outdoor ads will appear in several places, as well as video material.
Kraps explained that the campaign was aimed at young drivers. "Aggressive driving can be equated with arrogance and legal nihilism, because it is no secret that when people are in a hurry they often have the feeling that the traffic rules are written for someone else," Krapsis emphasized.
The police spokesman pointed out that law enforcement officers will continue to use their arsenal to fight serious traffic offenders. One of the most effective ways is to use un-marked police cars, he added.
