On Thursday, 19 June, a time capsule was ceremoniously laid at 51 Slokas Street in Riga, marking the start of construction for the second “Duck Republik” student hotel in Latvia’s capital. The new building is set to become one of the most modern student housing facilities in the Baltics and is expected to open its doors to over 250 students by the summer of 2026. The total investment in the project is €14.5 million.
The time capsule contains a letter to future generations, the day’s newspaper edition, as well as other symbolic things, representing the fact that the building will be predominantly occupied by students and young professionals. The ceremony was attended by representatives of the project developer “Duck Republik,” construction partner SIA “Merko Būve,” architects from SIA “Vilnis Mičulis,” and the Riga Investment and Tourism Agency.
As emphasised by “Duck Republik” board members Henrik Veldi and Ada Fida: “Our goal is not just to build or renovate buildings, but to create an environment where young people can grow, thrive, and feel at home. The construction of a second student hotel confirms the strong demand in Latvia for high-quality, sustainable, and community-oriented student accommodation. And why wouldn’t there be? Latvia’s higher education system is of excellent quality, appreciated by both international and local students. By developing such housing, we can further strengthen Latvia’s potential in the global higher education market.”
Jānis Zilgme, Chairman of the Management Board at “Merko Būve”: “With the sealing of the time capsule, we have officially launched the construction of the “Duck Republik” student residence – a project dedicated to the growth and well-being of our future professionals. We are truly pleased to contribute to Riga’s urban environment with a modern, sustainable, and functional living space for students. This project has been carefully designed so that every detail supports a high-quality daily life and inspires young talents to grow and reach their goals. The time capsule marks a symbolic step toward the future, and I wish all future residents courage, determination, and great success – this environment is being created especially for you”.
Fredis Bikovs, Director of the Riga Investment and Tourism Agency: “This is a significant step towards making Riga an even more attractive destination for students from around the world. Private sector involvement in improving the student experience demonstrates that our city is open to innovation and sustainable growth.”
The new student hotel will be a three-storey building with an additional underground level and will be the second “Duck Republik” project in Riga. It will offer functional and thoughtfully designed living spaces, shared common areas, and a supportive community environment. The first “Duck Republik” residence opened in 2020 on Lauvas Street following a €7.5 million investment.
The mission of “Duck Republik” is to bring people together—both from abroad and from Latvia—students and young professionals alike, who have chosen Latvia as the place to take their first steps in their careers, while building connections that may serve them throughout life.
