RIGA - Currently, there is "relatively little pressure" on the border with Belarus in connection with the Lukashenko regime's attempt to force people into Latvia, Interior Minister Marija Golubeva (For Development) said today at the Saeima's Inquiry Committee meeting.
Currently, the pressure at the border is up to 25 people a day trying to enter Latvia, which is less than in August, the minister explained. Golubeva pointed out that the interior services at the border continue to work on heightened alert.
The politician also pointed out that there is extreme pressure on the Belarusian border with Poland and considerable pressure on the Belarusian border with Lithuania.
As reported, since August 10, a total of 1,664 persons have been stopped from illegally crossing from Belarus into Latvia.
Since a state of emergency was declared in regions at the Latvian-Belarusian border on August 11, 44 illegal immigrants have been allowed to enter Latvia for humanitarian reasons, and 396 people have been detained for illegal border crossing.
