The Rothko Centre named Latvia’s Best Place for Culture 2021

  • 2022-02-22

On 19 February, winners of the Kilogram of Culture 2021 Award by Latvia’s public media were announced, highlighting last year’s standout achievements in the field of culture across nine nominations. The Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre earned one of the prizes as “Best Place for Culture 2021”.

The Kilogram of Culture Award by Latvia’s public media aims to assess standout achievements in Latvian culture by recruiting competent experts from the national television and radio, and other public media and holding a popular vote among TV and radio audiences.

We can enjoy culture across a broad spectrum of locations – in museums, galleries, theatres, cafes and even online, so the Best Place for Culture nomination featured both physical sites and websites. This year, a record number of nominees was proposed – 36 very different offline and online locations the Latvian public thought most inspirational throughout 2021.

The Kilogram of Culture Award has gone to Daugavpils, and we are thrilled to receive it. It embodies the high appreciation of the Rothko Centre’s activities when museum doors were closed to the public, recognises the quality of the exhibition projects shown on its premises and beyond and sets the quality bar for the year to come. “Thank you, colleagues, thank you, Daugavpils, and thank you, everyone, who visits cultural sites – the places that inspire us to reflect, connect and get going,” says Māris Čačka, the Rothko Centre director.

The award is another step for the city of Daugavpils towards the European Capital of Culture 2027.
