Lithuania has participated in the multinational Eurovision contest well over 25 times since their initial debut in 1994, and while their singers have yet to make it to the podium, this country has nonetheless produced numerous successful singers over the years. What is perhaps even more interesting is that Eurovision represents only one step of a much longer journey.

A Brief History

In truth, Lithuania stemmed from rather humble roots in terms of their association with Eurovision (formerly known as the Eurovision Song Contest). When they first broke onto the scene in 1994, they walked away with zero points. Although Lithuania has not yet walked away with a win, they still managed to obtain sixth place in 2006. How Does Lithuania Qualify for the Eurovision Song Contest?

The first step involves national competitions that are used to narrow down the number of candidates. These have come in various forms over the years; one of the most famous being the title "Pabandom iš naujo!" used from 2020 to 2023. While thousands of participants will register for such events, judges eventually narrow down the possibilities to a number of top-tier singers, and the exact number varies from year to year. This selection format also involves numerous heats that further narrow down the contestant pool; the victors ultimately being determined by a professional jury alongside votes cast by the public.

Lithuania launched a 2024 campaign that required the top 40 contestants to participate in a series of five semi-final rounds. Two competitors from each of the five semi-finals would then move forward. The winner was then chosen from this pool of candidates, which leads us into the next section.

A Closer Look at the Qualification Process

The national governing body will first provide submission forms that are open to all potential singers. This generally takes place in the autumn preceding the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. In terms of Lithuania, all entrants do not necessarily have to be permanent citizens. International collaborations have become commonplace.

The voting system is also decidedly straightforward, and this is often referred to as the 50-50 approach. Here is a brief summary:

- The other 50% represents public votes during live domestic television broadcasts.

Once these qualifiers have been determined, the remaining contestants will progress to the national Lithuanian semi-finals before moving on to the grand final.
