The Estonian Defence Forces have expanded their vehicle fleet with new tactical vehicles supplied by Volvo Defence, featuring 4x4 and 6x6 drivetrains. These modern and versatile vehicles are specifically designed to handle challenging terrain conditions and support units in both logistical and operational tasks.
According to Erko Sepri, Strategic Category Manager (Vehicles, Machinery & Logistics) at the Estonian Centre for Defence Investments (ECDI), the introduction of tactical vehicles represents a significant step in enhancing the Defence Forces’ capabilities. “These vehicles are a strategic investment that boosts mobility and operational readiness. The technology and capabilities of those vehicles ensure that our units are well-equipped to fulfill their duties in any situation,” emphasized Sepri.
The Volvo 44R and 66R trucks are built to cope with challenging terrains and weather conditions and can be easily adapted for various tasks, including transporting equipment and personnel. Additionally, they are equipped with modern safety technologies that ensure the safety of the driver and the reliability of the vehicles under difficult conditions. The trucks also feature modern driver assistance systems that meet civilian logistics standards, making their maintenance simple and cost-effective.
"Tactical trucks are crucial tools for battle units, both for transporting equipment and personnel, especially in our terrain, which often presents serious challenges. The tactical trucks currently in use have served for nearly 50 years and need replacement. The trucks being procured will renew the vehicle fleet of key units, which will undoubtedly increase not only the level of technical reliability but also boost the morale of the units," said Major Raigo Puusepp, the Chief Technician of the Estonian Defence Forces.
Over the next year, the vehicle fleet of the defence forces will be augmented with both logistical and tactical trucks. In addition to Volvo Defence, vehicles are also being supplied by Scania Eesti and Veho Eesti.
The framework agreement allows for the procurement of vehicles not only for the defence forces but also for the Defence League, the Police and Border Guard Board, and subsidiary institutions of the Latvian Ministry of Defence.
