TALLINN - The mayor of Tartu, Urmas Klaas, and the mayor of Lviv, Andriy Sadovyy, will sign a twinning agreement between the two cities in Tartu on Thursday at 3 p.m.
In a press release on Wednesday, Klaas described the moment as historic.
"We have been cooperating with Lviv in various forms for decades. However, our communication became more active when the war broke out. Residents of Tartu have helped Lviv in many ways -- by donating both money and various items. The friendship agreement will support our existing cooperation and will help to find new opportunities for cooperation in all areas," the mayor added.
Cooperation between the two cities will focus on tourism and sport, education, science, culture and arts, healthcare and rehabilitation, environmental protection and local governance.
The signing ceremony will take place at the beginning of the meeting of the Tartu council in the University of Tartu Library at 3 p.m. and will be webcast on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sx3h59636M0.
Tartu currently has 15 twin cities and five partner cities.
