RIGA - Swimming pools, fitness centers and gyms will also be allowed to reopen in accordance with the latest decisions taken by the government on Thursday, Edgars Severs, head of the sports department of the Education and Science Ministry, told LETA.

The government decided on Thursday to allow organized contactless sporting activities and exercising as of May 12 on the condition that people observe the two-meter distance rule and the number of participants in one group does not exceed 25 people.

The maximum duration on an indoor workout has been set at three hours but on time limits have been set on outdoor activities.

The ministry's official indicated that the government decision also applies to indoor sports facilities, including swimming pools,  but stressed that compliance with epidemiological safety requirements will be essential.

The Education and Science Ministry has updated its recommendations on sports activities in line with the government's latest decisions, which come into effect on May 12. The recommendations are being being harmonized with the Health Ministry.
