Some people in Latvia believe, wrongly, that they can get HIV from insect bites or wastewater; only slightly more than half of the people have sufficient knowledge about HIV, according to a survey carried this year out by Agihas support group for people living with HIV and AIDS. Latvia ranks first in Europe in terms of new HIV cases registered each year - 18.8 per 100,000 residents, which is three times higher than the European average.
