Statue of Mahatma Gandhi to be erected in Tallinn

TALLINN - The City of Tallinn in cooperation with the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is planning to erect a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the capital city.

The City of Tallinn and the Foreign Ministry have signed a cooperation agreement seeking to boost relations between Estonia and India and receive the bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi gifted by the Republic of India in a dignified way.

Pursuant to the cooperation agreement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will hand over the statue to the City of Tallinn and make a support payment of 50,000 euros to the city, which Tallinn will be obligated to use for erecting a monument to Mahatma Gandhi.

The monument will be established at 263a Sopruse Avenue in Tallinn's Mustame district. The works will include the installation of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, the relating structures, lighting and urban furniture as well as the construction of roads. The Tallinn Urban Environment and Public Works Department will hold public procurement for the corresponding design and construction works, the estimated cost of which will be 80,000 euros. The actual cost of the works will be determined as a result of the public procurement.
