RIGA - Declaration of the state of emergency has not been politically motivated, but the goal is to curb the Covid-19 outbreak, said Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins (New Unity) in a press conference today.

Asked about the collection of signatures at public initiative portal on easing restrictions on recreation and beauty care services, such as saunas, Karins said that he understands concerns of different sectors and the society.

"Decisions made by the government are not politically motivated. We asked specialists about what should be done to break the spread of Covid-19 virus, and the result was the state of emergency," the prime minister said.

He underscored that if people do not comply with the epidemiological safety measures, Latvia might not succeed in curbing the virus. "If we do not succeed, the situation is different. Health care system already now is overloaded," he said.

The prime minister reminded that the government today supported the Economics Ministry's proposals on state support to businesses and employees, and will keep looking for further support solutions.
