RIGA - The solidarity of Latvian Olympians with Ukraine is gold in itself, stressed President Edgars Rinkevics, who welcomed the participants of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games at Riga Castle on Tuesday.
The president's spokesman Martins Dregeris told LETA that Rinkevics congratulated luge racer Elina Ieva Bota on taking the silver medal and short track speed skater Roberts Kruzbergs on taking the bronze medal.
The president noted that nowadays sport is often associated with one political activity or another. He mentioned that at the Winter Olympics, Ukrainian athletes were not allowed freedom of expression and were not allowed to remind the world about the war taking place in their country.
In Rinkevics' view, this was unjustified. The president appreciated the solidarity of Latvian athletes, which he described as gold.
As reported, Latvia was represented at the 25th Olympic Winter Games by the largest delegation to date - 68 athletes. Latvian athletes competed in nine sports and 28 disciplines.
Latvia won two medals at the Games. Bota took silver in the luge and Kruzbergs took bronze in the short-track.
