Smiltens appointed as Unity party’s deputy chairman

MP Edvards Smiltens has been approved as the deputy chairman of the Unity party, Andris Piebalgs, the newly-elected party chairman, told the press after the Unity board meeting on Monday. Smiltens and Piebalgs both vied for the Unity chairmanship, and Piebalgs won the election at the party’s extraordinary congress last Saturday but by a narrow margin. After the board meeting Piebalgs said he was glad that Smiltens had agreed to become his deputy.
