RIGA - This year Latvia has seen a slight increase in the crime rate, said State Police Chief Armands Ruks in an interview on Latvian Television this morning.

Ruks estimated that the number of recorded crimes this year could have increased by "two or three percent".

For example, the number of thefts from shops has increased, he said. The police are also reporting more crimes of violence, as people are less likely to hide such abuses and more willing to report them to law enforcement officers, under the influence of various campaigns.

"Nothing extraordinary has happened," Ruks commented on crime trends, while admitting that the police cannot rest either, as new challenges, such as those related to ensuring national security, are on the agenda.
