RIGA - An unauthorized protest was staged outside the Saeima building on Monday against the Covid-19 rules prohibiting collective sports activities for up to 12 year old children.

A video posted on Facebook by hockey referee Sandra Minakovska showed more than 100 people, most of them children, taking part in the protest. Many of the kids wore hockey jerseys and held hockey sticks.

In one of the videos she had posted on social media Minakovska indicated that initially the crowd of protesters gathered by the Ministry of Education and Science but since nobody came out of the building to talk to the protesters, they left for the parliament.

The kids banged their hockey sticks on the pavement and chanted "We want ice!". At least two police officers could be seen in the video footage guarding public order at the Saeima building.

The protesters demanded the right for the children to train "at least with negative tests taken at school".

Aira Ancane, a representative of Riga City Council, told LETA that the local government had not been informed about the protest, which therefore can be considered unauthorized.

Law enforcement authorities have started an inquiry into the unauthorized protest. According to police estimates, the picket had gathered around 200 people by the parliament house, around third of whim were children, LETA was told at the State Police.
