RIGA – This year seven schools will be closed in Latvia and 25 others reorganized, the Latvian Education and Science Ministry reported.

By the beginning of the new school year in September, ten educational establishments will be reorganized by changing the level of education they are providing. A number of educational institutions will be merged with others.

Also several local governments have made decisions on liquidation of their schools.

The decision on reorganization, liquidation or foundation of educational institutions are made by local governments. The local governments then inform the Education and Science Ministry on their decision, asking the ministry to approve it.

The ministry noted that decisions should not be based just on mathematical calculations or short-term economic benefits. The school network should be viewed in the context of regional development strategy.
