Scientific study: A new method for determining the true fluoride effectiveness in toothpastes developed in Latvia

When brushing our teeth, we rely not only on toothpaste to freshen our breath but also to protect our teeth. For this to happen, the presence of fluoride – a mineral that strengthens tooth enamel and helps prevent cavities is essential. Therefore, to more accurately assess the effectiveness of toothpastes, researchers at the University of Latvia, in collaboration with the largest cosmetics manufacturer in the Baltics, H.A.Brieger, have developed a new scientifically based method to determine bioavailable fluoride ions – that is, the actual amount of fluoride released and activated during brushing, which protects the teeth.

Unlike previous methods, this new approach allows for the assessment of the exact amount of fluoride that is actually available to protect the oral cavity during tooth brushing. Fluoride is the only scientifically proven active ingredient that effectively protects teeth against cavities and is recommended by dentists for caries prevention. The development of this effectiveness method is based on the latest international research and adapted to a realistic usage scenario – one minute of tooth brushing, as it occurs in everyday life.

“This method provides a much more accurate understanding of how effectively fluoride-containing products work. It is an important step both from a scientific perspective and for consumer protection,” says project leader Prof. Dr. chem. Arturs Vīksna.

The study analyzed eight “Dzintars” toothpastes produced by H.A.Brieger, including four from the innovative “Asari” series, as well as four functional toothpastes – whitening, multifunctional, for sensitive teeth, and for healthy gums. The results showed that the bioavailable fluoride content in these products is very high – up to 94% of the total declared amount. Compared to other toothpastes available on the market, where this indicator ranges from 73% to 86%, the “Dzintars” products demonstrate significantly higher effectiveness.

The Dzintars range already includes 10 toothpastes. The functional toothpaste line features four products – specially whitening, multifunctional, for sensitive teeth, and for healthy gums. Meanwhile, the innovative Asari toothpaste series offers four products distinguished by particularly vibrant flavors: quince-apple, blackcurrant, orange, and rhubarb. Additionally, there are two types of Mazirbe toothpastes available for children.
