Saeima supports publishing KGB documents online by end-2018

RIGA - Saeima on Thursday approved in the final reading a bill on publishing KGB files online by the end of this year.

President Raimonds Vejonis will now have to promulgate the law.

According to the bill, documents to be published online include phone catalogs listing KGB employees, and a card index listing outside collaborators. The information will be published on the website of the Latvian National Archives by December 31.

Starting from May 1, 2019, also other KGB documents will be digitized and published online.

As reported, Vejonis said earlier this week that he would decide whether to promulgate the bill on making KGB files public after Saeima votes on the legislation and he can get acquaint himself with it, the President's Chancery told LETA.

The president supports making KGB files public, and Saeima has already approved the initiative once, in 2014. "Right now, the question is how it will be done. It is important that the information that is made public is correct and in the best interests of society," said Vejonis.
